Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University: A Unique Blend of Language, Culture, and Modern Education in Lucknow

Established with the vision of preserving linguistic heritage while embracing modern education, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University (KMCLU), Lucknow, has steadily emerged as a distinctive centre of learning in Uttar Pradesh. Founded in 2009 under the Uttar Pradesh Arabi-Farsi Universities Act, the university reflects a rare confluence of language, culture, technology, and professional education.
Lucknow | The institution began its journey on 1 October 2009 as Uttar Pradesh Urdu, Arabi-Farsi University. Over the years, it evolved both in name and vision—first being renamed Shri Kanshiramji Urdu, Arabi-Farsi University in 2011, and later rechristened in 2012 as Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Urdu, Arabi-Farsi University, in honour of the revered Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer, globally known for his message of universal love, peace, and harmony. In February 2020, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved its renaming as Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University, further strengthening its identity as a language-focused institution.
Inspired by a Message of Unity
Naming the university after Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti—popularly known as Gharib Nawaz—was deeply symbolic. His philosophy of “Sulh-i-Kul” (peace with all) resonates with Lucknow’s own Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb, making the city an ideal home for an institution committed to inclusivity, cultural dialogue, and human values.
Academic Growth and Expanding Horizons
The university began its first academic session in August 2013 with 413 students, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in languages, humanities, social sciences, education, commerce, computer science, management, and journalism. Today, the student strength has grown to over 3,800, and the range of programmes has expanded significantly.
Recognised under Sections 12B and 2(f) of the UGC, the university has gradually strengthened its academic credibility. While languages remain its core strength—Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Hindi, English, and Sanskrit—the university has also embraced multidisciplinary education in line with NEP 2020, promoting multilingualism, skill-based learning, and value-added courses across departments.
Entry into Professional and Technical Education
Responding to student aspirations and employment trends, the university introduced AICTE-approved B.Tech programmes in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Fashion Technology, and Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in 2019. Legal education has also gained momentum with the launch of LL.M, while preparations are underway to introduce LL.B.
Alongside this, diploma programmes and vocational courses continue to attract students, reinforcing the university’s commitment to job-oriented and skill-driven education.
Infrastructure, Campus Life, and Digital Safety
Located on Sitapur–Hardoi Bypass Road, adjacent to IIM Lucknow, the university currently spans 28 acres, with plans for further expansion. The state government has approved the acquisition of additional land to support long-term growth. The campus is digitally secured with CCTV surveillance, offers free Wi-Fi, and supports both academic and co-curricular activities, including regular sports events and physical education programmes.
The university library houses a rich collection of over 11,000 books, including rare publications from Munshi Naval Kishore Press and valuable donations from scholars and institutions in India and abroad, making it a key academic resource for language and cultural studies.
Governance, Faculty, and Vision Ahead
The university functions under statutory bodies such as the Executive Council, Academic Council, and Finance Committee, constituted as per government notifications. It has a sanctioned strength of 74 teaching faculty members and 60 non-teaching staff, supporting its academic and administrative operations.
Looking ahead, the university plans to introduce a wide range of new disciplines, including science subjects, social sciences, biotechnology, environmental science, nanotechnology, statistics, tourism, distance education, and Unani & Ayurvedic medical education, positioning itself as a comprehensive centre of higher learning.
A University with a Soul
More than just an academic institution, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University stands as a symbol of cultural harmony, linguistic pride, and progressive education. With its unique blend of tradition and modernity, the university continues to carve a niche in Uttar Pradesh’s higher education landscape—nurturing minds, preserving heritage, and preparing students for a global future rooted in human values.
