The indefinite protest at Lucknow University entered its seventh day on Monday, with students maintaining pressure on the administration over the expulsion of student leaders and a recent fee hike. Demonstrators said they would continue their agitation until the university addresses their concerns and takes what they describe as corrective action.
The protesters are demanding the immediate withdrawal of disciplinary action against student leaders, a rollback of increased fees, and what they call a fair and transparent approach to resolving the ongoing dispute.
Political support grows
The movement received a boost as senior Samajwadi Party leader and MLA Ravidas Mehrotra visited the protest site and interacted with students. After meeting university officials, Mehrotra urged the administration to revoke the expulsions and warned that the issue could be raised beyond the campus if no action is taken.
Samajwadi Party leader Sharmila Maharaj also met the protesting students and expressed support for their demands. She later called on the university administration to reconsider the disciplinary measures and engage with students constructively.
Former Vice-Chancellor calls for democratic campus environment
Adding to the growing support, former Lucknow University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rooprekha Verma backed the students and stressed the importance of dialogue and democratic values within educational institutions.
She argued that universities should remain spaces for discussion, dissent, and academic freedom, and urged the administration to review the expulsions while fostering a more inclusive campus atmosphere.
Former student union president criticises action
Former Lucknow University Students’ Union president Dr. Neeraj Jain described the expulsions as unjust and said efforts to intensify the movement would continue if the administration failed to reverse its decision.
Students vow to continue agitation
Students including Prince Prakash, Prem Yadav, Harshit Shukla, Abhishek Srivastava, Mahendra Yadav, Vipul Yadav, and Ansh Patel were present at the protest site and extended their support to the ongoing movement. Student protesters maintained that their movement remains peaceful and democratic. They argued that the fee hike has placed an additional financial burden on many students, while the disciplinary action against student leaders has raised concerns over fairness and representation on campus.
