In a significant step towards promoting women’s safety and empowerment, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University organized a one-day self-defence training workshop for female students on Wednesday under the banner of the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit.
The workshop was held under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raj Kumar Mittal and guided by NSS Programme Officer Dr. Taruna. The event began with the ceremonial lamp lighting and tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Taruna underlined the increasing need for self-defence training among young women, stating that education must go hand in hand with personal safety awareness and mental preparedness. She said self-defence skills help students develop confidence, presence of mind, and the ability to respond effectively in difficult situations.
“Women today need to be not only academically strong but also mentally alert and physically prepared. Self-defence training empowers them with confidence and the courage to protect themselves,” she said.
The practical training session was conducted by volunteers Anu, Saloni, and Anuj from Red Brigade NGO, an organization led by women’s rights activist Usha Vishwakarma. Trainers demonstrated a range of self-defence techniques and shared guidance on handling unsafe or emergency situations.
Female students actively participated in the interactive session and learned essential safety techniques, situational awareness, and emergency response strategies. The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation and was widely appreciated by students for its practical relevance and empowering approach.
The initiative concluded with a message encouraging students to remain aware, confident, and self-reliant, reinforcing the importance of women’s safety and empowerment in educational spaces.
