Amid reports of technical difficulties in the evaluation of Class 12 board examination answer sheets, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified that the newly introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) system is a major step towards modernising the examination process and ensuring greater transparency and accuracy in evaluation.

CBSE City Coordinator Dr. Jawaid Alam Khan said the Board has introduced digital evaluation for the first time to make answer book checking more reliable, secure and efficient. He acknowledged that evaluators may initially face minor technical and operational challenges, but stressed that these are temporary issues commonly associated with the implementation of any new technology-driven system.

Focus on Accuracy and Transparency

According to the Board, the On-Screen Marking system offers several safeguards to improve the quality of evaluation. Features such as automated totaling, masking of student identities, random allocation of answer sheets and digital audit trails are aimed at reducing human error and ensuring unbiased assessment.

The system also enables real-time monitoring of evaluators’ work, secure digital storage of answer books and multiple quality checks by Sub-Examiners and Head Examiners. CBSE officials believe the process will help deliver faster and more transparent results in the long run.

Dr. Khan said the paperless evaluation system is environmentally friendly and also reduces the risk of answer sheets being misplaced during physical transportation. He added that proper training and technical support are being provided to teachers to help them adapt to the new digital platform smoothly.

The Board maintained that the new evaluation model would strengthen the credibility of the examination system while preparing teachers and institutions for future digital advancements in education.
