In a major student-centric move, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) has approved a series of reforms aimed at enhancing academic flexibility, research opportunities, and industry readiness. The decisions were taken during the 75th meeting of the University’s Academic Council, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. J.P. Pandey, focusing on introducing new PhD disciplines, launching emerging technology courses, and strengthening student support systems.

The council approved the introduction of PhD programs in English, Industrial Sociology, and Industrial Psychology, opening interdisciplinary research pathways for students. To make the research process more efficient, the Research Degree Committee (RDC) will now meet every month, significantly reducing waiting time for PhD scholars.

Focus on Emerging Technologies

Aligning with global trends, the university has cleared a 20-credit online course in advanced fields such as space and quantum technology. This initiative aims to prepare students for future industry demands by equipping them with cutting-edge technical knowledge.

In a major push toward innovation, AKTU will introduce a structured internship program through its Innovation Hub. This two-credit internship will allow students to work directly with startups while also receiving stipends, encouraging practical exposure and entrepreneurial thinking.

Expansion of Academic Programs

The council has approved new B.Voc programs in Journalism & Mass Communication and Graphics & Multimedia. Additionally, a proposal to introduce a BCA program at the UP Institute of Design has received in-principle approval, further diversifying academic offerings.

To support academic growth, AKTU has doubled seminar grants, Vishvesvaraya grants, and travel grants from 50 to 100 beneficiaries each. The university has also mandated the creation of local SWAYAM chapters in affiliated institutions and approved bringing 40% of postgraduate courses onto MOOCs platforms to enhance digital learning access.

The council emphasized maintaining academic and examination quality as a key condition for granting autonomy to affiliated colleges. In line with this, the academic autonomy of the Institute of Engineering and Technology Lucknow has been further enhanced. The meeting was attended by Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajeev Kumar, along with senior university officials, deans, and external experts from premier institutions including IIT Kanpur and IIT Roorkee.
