LU Students Tension High: Allege Police Overreach, Demand Probe from DCP

₹50K bond notices issued; students allege hasty action, NSUI seeks probe and FIR withdrawal
Campus Times | Lucknow
A campus storm is brewing at the University of Lucknow, where student leaders have gone on the offensive, accusing the police of filing ‘false cases’ and issuing notices hastily following a political protest call—igniting fresh tension among the youth.
In a strongly worded memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Zone), students alleged that several leaders were asked to furnish bonds of ₹50,000 each, calling the move “unfair and excessive.” Adding to the anger are claims that many students named in the FIRs were not even active participants in the proposed Assembly gherao.
Framing the issue as a fight for rights, student groups said the police action directly challenges constitutional freedoms under Article 19—including the right to free speech, peaceful assembly, and association. “You cannot label peaceful protest as a crime,” a student leader remarked, echoing sentiments across the campus.
The controversy has deepened with allegations that notices were issued without proper verification, implicating students beyond NSUI, including members of Samajwadi student groups. Many see this as a case of “overreach” rather than lawful enforcement.
With emotions running high, the memorandum demands a fair probe, immediate withdrawal of what students call “baseless” cases, and an end to alleged harassment.
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has now put the administration on notice, warning of a full-scale democratic protest if their demands are not addressed promptly.
As tensions escalate, all eyes are on the police administration—whether it moves to defuse the situation or faces a growing student movement in the coming days.
